ICT Today is the most active and useful technology these days with over three billion people having access to the Internet. With approximately 8 out of 10 Internet users owning a smartphone, information and data are increasing by leaps and bounds. This rapid growth, especially in developing countries, has led ICT to become a keystone of everyday life, in which life without some facet of technology renders most of clerical, work and routine tasks dysfunctional.

IV. WORLD WIDE WEB



The World Wide Web (WWW) is an information space where documents and other web resources are identified by URLs, interlinked by hypertext links, and can be accessed via the Internet. The World Wide Web was invented by english scientist Tim Berners-Lee in 1989. This is the most important part of the internet, it is where all the data is stored and you can locate a whole new world if you browse through the web. To be able to understand the function of internet, you first need to know that it is basically the hardware that connects all the web running computers. The World Wide Web is the information that is available on the internet in form of web pages. 

V. SOCIAL MEDIA

Social media are computer-mediated tools that allow people, companies and other organizations to create, share, or exchange information, career interests, ideas, and pictures/videos in virtual communities and networks. This is part of life online as social websites application proliferate. ICT produced another high impact application, Web 2.0 which is used in socializing and communicating. In today's generation, social media is very useful especially for people who wants to communicate to their loved ones away from them. Through social media, people could also start a business at home. In this way, it would be easier for the businessmen to communicate with their clients, send pictures of their products and make their products popular by promoting it in the social media sites.



VI. RESEARCH AND INFORMATION SEEKING

Research and Information seeking uses different sources on the internet to look up information about a certain topic that the users want to learn. It is an ideal application that is made through the innovation of ICT and the World Wide Web.

         There are different information sources that are presented in the internet and these sources are listed below.


  • Web Search Engines
        These are computer programs that search documents for specified keywords and returns a list of the documents where the keywords are found. It enables users to locate information on the World Wide Web and it maintains short summaries of the billions of pages on the Web. 
      The search results are generally presented in a line of results often referred to as search engine results pages (SERPs). Some of the examples of Web Search Engines are Google, Yahoo and Bing.

  •  Research Indexing Sites
         These are websites that are often called as an online library. It is used to collect information broadly about scholarly literature. It is a website designed to allow users to search across many disciplines and sources like articles, thesis, books, abstracts and court opinions. An example of research indexing site is Google Scholar.

  • Massive Online Open Course (MOOC)
       These are websites that are often called as online school. It is dedicated to inform and teach users focused on different areas by using the World Wide Web as a tool to establish communication between the teacher and the student.  
      MOOC's are a recent and widely research development in distance education. The term MOOC was coined by Dave Cormier in 2008 and emerged as a popular mode of learning in 2012. An example of a Massive Online Open Course (MOOC) is Coursera.

  • Employment Web Sites
        These are websites dedicated to offer and search job opportunities for the user. It deals specifically with employment and career. It enables companies to post job vacancies and job requirements to be filled up by the aspiring workers. An example of an Employment Web Site is Dice and Crunchboard.

  • Electronic Commerce (E-commerce)
       This is the facilitation of trading in products or services using computer networks such as the Internet or online social networks. It is a type of business model that enables a firm or an individual to conduct business over the World Wide Web.  
      Electronic commerce operates in all four of the major market segments which are the (1) business to business (2) business to consumer (3) consumer to consumer and (4) consumer to business.
